Khatan Sushi

Oaklands Premier Sushi Restaurant

We first discovered this space while celebrating a birthday — and instantly fell in love with it. We said to ourselves, "If this place ever goes up for sale, we’d love to own it." Some time later, when we found out it was available, we saved up, took a leap of faith, and after a long and challenging process, we made it happen — we became the proud owners of Khatan Sushi.
Khatan Sushi is a true family business. I'm Gabriele Modica, born and raised in Italy, with years of experience in culinary arts and restaurant management across the Bay Area and around the world. My wife, Uka, has lived in the Bay Area for many years and worked extensively in sushi restaurants. Together with our Executive Sushi Chef, Turu — whose deep expertise in Japanese cuisine inspired us — we chose to keep the restaurant’s focus authentically Japanese, and Khatan Sushi was born.
The name Khatan means "queen" in Mongolian. In Mongolian history, a Khatan played a powerful role in leading the empire after the king's reign. Since Uka is Mongolian, we named the restaurant as a tribute to strong women and to our community. Our mission is to bring you the finest sushi, made with top-quality ingredients, in a chic and dynamic setting with a great vibe.
You'll also meet our daughter, Anika, in the dining room — she's one of our servers, the curator of the music playlist, and always brings her own unique sparkle and energy to the experience.
We look forward to welcoming you to Khatan Sushi — where every detail is a reflection of our passion, our family, and our love for good food and great company.
